Kristen Starkey - Piano
Kristen is a Nationally Certified Music Teacher with an M. M. in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. She is a Dallas-native who grew up in the Garland area. Before attending John Brown University, where she received her B. S. in Music: Piano, her parents homeschooled. While at JBU she received the Mildred M. Patterson scholarship and was named the Oisen Award winner in 2010. She graduated from SMU in 2015. While there, she taught in the Piano Preparatory Dept. and in the undergraduate Class Piano program. She was on the faculty of the SMU Institute for Young Pianists in 2014 and 2015.
She is passionate about helping beginners start their piano journey with good technique and a healthy dose of creativity. She has presented on beginner technique building through improvisation at the Collegiate Music Teacher’s National Convention and at the Texas Music Teacher’s Convention. Students studying with Kristen are equipped with the tools and techniques necessary to create and perform beautiful music. All students are encouraged to read music, lead sheets, and to compose their own melodies.
In addition to teaching, Kristen plays weekly for Arapaho Road Baptist Church in Garland, accompanies for UIL solo and ensemble, and plays for weddings. She has taken part in a jazz trio that accompanied the players presenting “A Charlie Brown Christmas” at the Bishop Arts Christmas in July event twice. Most recently she composed and recorded the music for “Jude (2018)” a short film that can be found on YouTube.
